ROLLO ROOTS

How The Rollo Centre Came To Be:

The Land - The property that the Rollo Seniors Centre sits on was donated to the Association by Norma Hodge in memory and honour of, Jimmy Rollo.  The land was re-classified from agricultural to recreational the following year.

The Building - The first building on the property was a mobile classroom that was moved from across the road in July 1984.

Early Association Beginnings - The Gabriola Senior Citizens Association was incorporated under the Societies Act of British Columbia, December 28, 1978 with the opening of the Rollo Seniors Centre on July 23rd, 1985 with Jimmy Rollo cutting the ribbon at the opening ceremonies.

Early Activities - Square Dancing, Tai Chi, Shuffleboard Tournaments, Darts, Table Tennis, Bingo and a Monday Morning Discussion Group.

Grants from many sources aided in getting the building installed on the property and the acquiring of equipment for activities such as shuffleboard, darts, table tennis and bingo.
